What is Hot Monkey Sox?
Ever wonder what happens to your sock's mates? Where do they go? Your runaway socks may be mixing it up at Hot Monkey Sox... where single socks can mingle with other singles to begin a new life as a playa-made sock monkey.
Daily Sock-monkey workshops:
Kids and grups are welcome to come relax in the shade during the heat of the day, when everyone should be resting anyway, to make a sock-monkey.
Workshops are hosted daily from 11am to 5pm. We provide socks, sewing notions, stuffing and accessories like yarn and fabric.
We welcome you to contribute:
* Clean Sox, mismatched singles welcome
* Old pillows for stuffing
* PLEASE NO BEADS!!
Beads = MOOP = Bad
Besides sock monkeys...
* Sock Puppets: If you have a short attention span, you can make a quick sock-puppet instead.
* Make a moop Bag: We'll have materials to make your own no-sew MOOP bag from a pair of old jeans.
* Hot Monkey Toss: Step up to the giant sling-shot and shoot a monkey through the faux-ring-of-fire!
We wanted to offer a meaningful gift and to give burners a chance to create something themselves at Black Rock. Taking the time to sit down to make a monkey, makes us all slow down, spend some quality time with fellow burners, and discover our own creativity.
We also wanted to reclaim and recycle something that is abundant in everyday life, socks. Sock Monkeys are the perfect playa pal, because they are born from what would have ended up as trash, and made from love.

Hot Monkey Sox Camp Plans - Minimize impact on the Playa:
* We plan to use materials for our campsite that lessen waste, and are recyclable or reusable.
* We will avoid bringing small trinkets, flimsy paper, small feathers (boas) and glass bottles since they typically get left on the playa for others to clean up.
* We plan to set up camp in a way that is easy to keep clean.
* We pledge to Leave No Trace in and around our campsite, including our own and other's waste. We will plan to put time aside for the cleanup, and plan the assembly and takedown of our structures and decorations to simplify their removal. We will keep our recyclable, burn-able, and non-burn-able items separated for easy disposal, recycle our aluminum, and bring no glass to the Playa.
* We will clean as we go, realizing that any trash or MOOP can blow away or be buried at any moment. We have assigned volunteers to check around camp daily for loose MOOP. We will take care of any trash left by our guests, invited or otherwise.
* We won't light fires on bare ground, leaving scars. If we must burn, we'll use a public burn barrel or burn platform and follow the safety guidelines for fires and burn scar prevention. We'll sweep up and haul out the ashes.
* We won't dig holes more than 6 inches in diameter or trenches, scarring the Playa.
* We will anchor or shade structures securely, keep all items tied or weighted down, leave papers at home.and stay prepared for the worst of dust storms.
* We will leave extra space in every vehicle on the way to the desert, knowing that re-packing will inevitably take up more space. We will take all our trash home in sealed containers.
* At the end of the week, we will spend time policing Black Rock City for random MOOP.
Clean up Plan
* We plan the breakdown and cleanup of our camp in detail, accounting for every board, stake and scrap., by packing in all the necessary tools for clean-up.* We will rake the playa to collect all small MOOP
* We will evaporate all grey water in an evaporation pool during the week. Any water that is not evaporated, will be dispersed with a watering can, to avoid creating puddles.
Camp Map:
Leave No Trace Officer
We hereby designate Judi Morales Gibson as the camp LNT Officer, who will ensure that our camp stays clean before, during and after the event. Judi will:
* Make our camp fun and spontaneous, yet clean.
* Get help with the cleanup from fellow BRC residents if and when it is needed.
* Plan our purchases and encourage us to reuse / recycle / reduce.
* Be there when it's time to take down and sweep our camp for every last trace and will make sure everything left goes with us.
