Sony Buys Columbia PicturesInteractive Press Release

CD-ROMs were training wheels for the internet.

This prototype of an exhaustively interlinked press database focused on the Sony acquisition of Columbia in the early nineties as a demonstration of the value cheaply distributed databases could be as prelude to the always-on internet access point we know now.

The interface is that of a standard paper press release with literal page-flipping navigation and highlight marker style jump links. As much as possible we designed the tools to mimic old-school physical real-world editing utensils. It was intended for CD-ROM distribution.

Important to this idea was that for the first time a vast quantity of product and corporate information could be disseminated to journalists in one simple package.Tools were provided to cut-n-paste text, pictures and sounds from press release databases, audio quotes from executives, collections of promotional movie trailers and music collections.

The database cruiser showed hierarchical levels of information navigation to assist news reports to get the details right. Also included were animated graphs depicting corporate financial reports and rationales for the buyout.
